Meet brothers, Aidan and Ty, their parents, Jason and Stephanie, and their little brother Cole. Make-A-Wish® has been honored to grant both boys wishes, a year apart. From Tea, the brothers, ages three and four, both face Lissencephaly and Microcephaly, a life-threatening condition that presents ongoing challenges and the need for medical care.
When it came to deciding on wishes for the boys, Jason and Stephanie wished for something that would bring smiles to their faces, while also helping improve their health.
The parents shared with the Make-A-Wish team that the boys, who have limited mobility, thrive in warm water and love to swim. For awhile Stephanie took the boys to a fitness center for warm water therapy. However, the task of getting them there, changing them to get ready to swim and changing them back, was challenging. In the winter months they were also concerned that the boys would get sick as they went from the warm fitness center outside into the cold.
Aidan’s wish for a hot tub was granted in late 2011. Ty’s wish for a sun porch to enclose the hot tub was granted in November. Now the boys can enjoy the hot tub year-round. Both wishes were granted at their home in Tea with family, friends and Make-A-Wish volunteers there to celebrate with them.
Jason and Stephanie explain the impact of the wishes best in their own words:
“Aidan & Ty are truly their happiest & healthiest when they are able to swim! There is such a relief in knowing we can provide our boys their water therapy at anytime, day or night – rain or shine! Aidan’s wish (a whirlpool) followed by Ty’s wish a year later (a sun porch to enclose the whirlpool) have been invaluable to our family. Our hearts melt when we see the smile on their face when they swim. And the warm, calming water optimizes their health! It helps them sleep better, aids in digestion, improves circulation & relaxes their stiff muscles (among many other benefits!). Our journey with Make-a-Wish and the boys’ wish sponsors has been amazing! This year has been particularly tough for our family, and especially for Aidan & Ty. To have the Make-a-Wish experience, and for our boys to be given happiness & joy through their wishes – that is priceless to us! We will be forever grateful for Aidan & Ty’s wishes!”
That’s the power of Make-A-Wish. It’s a wish with lasting impact.
Aidan’s wish was made possible by the Lloyd & Barbara Amundson Foundation, Sioux Falls. Ty’s wish was made possible by Angels With A Dream, Sioux Falls and Soukup Construction, Sioux Falls. Thanks also to the volunteers and Aidan and Ty’s family members who helped with the projects.
