Wishes bring Hope.

A wish come true helps children feel stronger, more energetic, more willing and able to battle their life-threatening medical conditions. For many of our wish kids, the wish marks a turning point in their fight against their illnesses. For their doctors, nurses and other health professionals, the wish experience works in concert with medicine to make their patients feel better emotionally and even physically.

Wish Child HaleyHaley, 9, of Sioux Falls, faces a germ cell tumor.  She has undergone chemotherapy for treatment, which is evident with the loss of her hair.  However, her smile and the sparkle in her blue eyes shows the joy she was having during her wish to go swim with dolphins this summer.  That’s the power of a wish and that’s why we want to reach even more kids.

Our mission is to grant the wishes of children with life-threatening medical conditions to enrich the human experience with hope, strength and joy.  To qualify, a child must be between the ages of 2 ½ and 18 and facing a life-threatening – progressive, degenerative, malignant – condition at the time of referral.

Today approximately 70 percent of wish kids overcome their medical conditions.  We have medical technology, research and incredible care to thank for their survival.

But getting better is no easy task for any kid.  The treatments can be as dispiriting and debilitating as the illnesses.  And this is where a Make-A-Wish® experience comes in.  Wishes remind kids of why they need to stay strong and why they need to comply with treatments.

  • 89% of medical professionals surveyed believe a wish experience can positively influence a child’s health.
  • 97% of adult former wish kids say they experienced improved mental and emotional health.
  • 98% of parents surveyed said the wish made them feel like a normal family.

We have granted wishes to more than 1,200 kids in every part of the state since our chapter began in 1984.  This past fiscal year we granted 55 wishes at an average cost of nearly $7,000 a wish.

Our vision is to make every eligible child’s wish come true.  We need your help to do so.

As a mom, I will remember what we went through, but to Haley her wish made everything go away, so thank you so much. ”
