Waiting in silence as Kenley stepped into her home for an unexpected surprise party, it was apparent how well-loved she truly is by friends and family. Not only does one become aware of the support of her classmates through pictures hung on the walls of the home, but also the loving and enduring support of her parents and brother.
In September 2016, Kenley was diagnosed with leukemia. Kenley's mom, Aimee, shared that during her initial hospital stay she was informed that she would be referred to Make-A-Wish® from her doctor. She met with the wish granters in November and began the wish process. They had her complete a packet going through questions like who she would want to meet, where she would want to go, what she wanted to be and what she would want. The most stand-out of her wish ideas was a bedroom makeover. During the initial visit she took it upon herself to sketch out the exact vision she had of a dream bedroom; Kenley's true wish was evident. In the picture, Kenley showed a lofted bed with a work station below, a beauty station, a comfy corner chair and some cool electronics. With the dream then on paper, it was realized how awesome this wish was going to be.
Kenley spent a lot of her days fighting leukemia, but on the day of her wish, the illness was set aside and the social ball of energy that her parents describe her as shined through. “I smell pizza,” exclaimed Kenley, as she entered her home full of party snacks. When her mom removed the blindfold, a roaring surprise greeting filled the room, and Kenley realized that these people were all there for her. What a shock it was, but also how exciting!
Wish Mom Aimee explained how her wish was granted at the perfect time. "While Make-A-Wish worked on making her wish come true, Kenley continued her treatments. The timing of her wish being granted could not have been more perfect. Kenley had sailed easily through most of her treatment up to this point, and was now finding herself at the hardest point. She wasn't feeling the best and she was starting to get really down. The surprise of her wish coming true on the 26th was absolutely perfect."
Before returning home to the surprise party revealing her room makeover, Kenley was able to spend the day with her family shopping at Toys “R” Us® and also went to one of her favorite restaurants, Buffalo Wild Wings®, for lunch.
When you see the smile on Kenley’s face and talk with the family and friends that were present for her wish reveal party, you realize how mature Kenley is for a 7-year-old. The compassionate nature that she possesses and the positive outlook on life are what radiated through her home on this very special day.
A big thank you to all who made Kenley’s wish come true and a very special thank you to Kid’s 2 College Furniture for executing the vision of Kenley’s wish and to the Hoff family of Sioux Falls and Lubbers family of Gregory for adopting her wish.
