After battling stage three Hodgkin lymphoma for a year, 17-year-old Alexis from Mitchell, wished to join more than two million people in Times Square on New Year’s Eve to watch the ball drop.

Alexis was a VIP guest at the New Year’s Eve celebration in Times Square. “My sister kept joking with me that I was famous because we really did feel like that,” Alexis said.

Alexis arrived to the event in an Open Loop Bus that was escorted by a motorcade. “Everyone was taking pictures of us because they thought we were famous because the high end people walk on that side of the fences,” Alexis stated.

Alexis met the New York Police Commissioner and her mom said “we had access to the area where pretty much only the NYPD was allowed so we got right up by all of the stages.”

The family from South Dakota went on to attend a VIP party on the 16th floor of a nearby skyscraper. Alexis’ family eventually headed up to the 22nd floor of the skyscraper for a once in a lifetime view of the ball dropping over Times Square.  “It was just us, like the whole 22nd floor was just us,” Alexis said, “you looked off the balcony and the ball was right there.”

“A piece of confetti ironically fell inside my purse so I have that to keep forever,” she shared.

Alexis only anticipated seeing the ball drop on New Year’s Eve, but she experienced so much more. The South Dakota teen also enjoyed an Open Loop Bus Tour, visited the Statue of Liberty and the National September 11 Memorial & Museum, checked out Madame Tussaud’s Wax Museum and attended the Broadway Show Wicked

Alexis' mother explained the impact of her wish trip, “You're not sure if she’s going to wake up from one day to the next, to see her go through all of this, losing her hair, being sick from all of the chemo and missing school and missing out on life really… so for her to just be able to catch up and live some life and do things that not everybody else gets to do, it was awesome.”

Alexis shared why she chose this as her wish, “I didn't assume I’d do it again and wanted to pick something I’d always remember.” Over the course of her wish trip, Alexis experienced a trip that she will always remember.

Her wish was made possible by the generous support of Adopt-A-Wish® partner Sioux Falls Ford Lincoln and Luxury Auto Mall. A special thank you to Make-A-Wish® Metro New York and Western New York for their assistance in making Alexis’ wish come true.
